After the inauguration of Jakarta Gems Center (JGC) Wednesday (5/12) by Jakarta Capital City Governor Fauzi Bowo, Rawabening becomes popular because in this area the second biggest gems center in South East Asia is located. The gems center is situated in front of Jatinegara railway station, East Jakarta.
Like other places, Rawabening cannot be separated from its history. The history started from the Netherlands colonialism era.
People told that Rawabening was a swamp. Based on the condition of the area, Rawabening has its name (rawa means swamp).
H Junaidy, a gems trader in JGC said that Rawabening, in the Netherlands era was known as Rawabangkai (swamp of carcasses). The name was changed to Rawabunga (flower swamp) and finally Rawabening (clean swamp). Based on story, the area was a place for people to throw away corpses in the war against the Netherlands.
“Rawabangkai has been known since the Netherlands era, but in 1980s Rawabangkai was called as Rawabunga,” Junaidy.
The same thing was also said by Azis Munandar, a Betawi figure who is a collector of historical stuff. He thought, Rawabunga was adopted from the name of Rawabangkai. Just replaced “bangkai” with “bunga”. The replacement was because there were many sex workers or “night flower” in that place.
In 1990s, Rawabunga was expanded. A small area in front of Jatinegara railway station was changed into Rawabening, and Rawabunga becomes the name of an urban village in Jatinegara.
At present, Rawabening becomes a gems center. People can find jewelries, akik stone, natural stones and ancient stuff collections there.
